BHS Stage 1 Training - With Samantha Critchlow BHS Stage 3 Coach in complete horsemanship

Tuesday evening –19.00 to 20.00 starting from 12th July 2022
An 8-week training programme to cover all parts of the British Horse Society Stage 1 care exam. The course is open to participants aged 13yrs+

Price: £10 each session and needs to be booked in advance

Week - 1 Introduction to the Course, BHS Aims and the responsibilities of working on the stable yard. Handling horses safely.

Week- 2 Grooming, Feeding, Watering

This session is focusing on the correct grooming routine, learning all the brushes in the grooming kit and reasons for grooming. This session will be covering feeding ratios, types of feed/forage and rules of feeding/watering.

Week 3– Tacking up, Parts of the Tack, Care Routine for Tack

This session we will be learning how to tack up the horse correctly for riding to exam standard, parts of the saddle and bridle, learn how to put on a martingale, basic fit of tack, and how to care for your tack.

Week 4 - Trotting Up, Footfalls, Parts of the Hoof, identify a Horse that needs to be Shod/Trimmed by a Farrier

This session we will learn how to trot up a horse correctly for the vet and learn about the footfalls. We will also learn the parts of the hoof and how to recognise when a horse needs to be shod or trimmed.

 Week 5– How to Tie Up a Hay Net, Colours, Markings, Field Management

We will learn how to tie up a hay net correctly and how to lift a bale of hay/straw. We will also be learning all the colours and markings on horses. Also looking at how to complete the daily field checks, on how to turn a horse out and bring them in safely and how to handle the horse according to their behaviour. .

 Week 6 - Mucking Out and Horse Health Checks, Horse Behaviour

This session we will be learning the correct procedures for mucking out different types of bedding and learning about why we use different types of bedding. We will also cover how to maintain muckheaps and how to dispose of them. We will also be learning how to check signs of good and bad health in stabled horses. We will look at the horse’s body language and facial expressions to see how they may be feeling/thinking

Week – 7 Measuring Horse/Pony, Points of the horses,

This session will include how to measure a horse/pony with a measuring stick, the points of the horse and where they are located on the horse’s body. We will also be learning how to decide whether a horse in overweight or underweight.

Week 8 – Horse Clothing

This week will be aimed around learning the different types of rugs that you can buy and how to fit. Also covered in this session is how to take a rug off and put a rug on safely. We will also cover how to out on and fit a pair of brushing boots.

Ride Safe Silver Challenge Award 

Gain the confidence and skills to ride safely on roads and when out and about. Know how to plan routes and prepare yourself and your horse to enjoy the countryside.

  • How to ride in an enclosed arena with other riders
  • How to ride with the reins in one hand
  • Checks to make before setting off
  • How to ask other road users to slow down or stop
  • Riding out on a road

This award is a pre-requisite to the BHS Stage 1

Stage 2 Ride, Lunge Care Training

- With Charlotte Belbin BHS Stage 4 Yard Manager with Riding

All training in a small group and will cover different stable management  topics from the BHS stage 2 syllabus and will also include riding (1hr flat and 1hr jumping) and lunging. Dates listed below

27th June 2022 - Fitting travel equipment and loading 

11th July 2022 - Plaiting and Turnout 

25th July 2022 - Fitting Tack and Boots 

Participants must have BHS Stage 1 ride and care or equivalent. Weight limit 13 stone. £95 each full day 9.30am to 4.30pm - Skills record can be signed off if the candidate is up to the level 

 

Stage 3/4 Ride, Lunge Care Training 

- With Sandra Morrison BHS I

All training in a small group with Sandra Morrison BHSI (Lead Assessor) and will cover different stable management  topics from the BHS stage 3/4 syllabus and will also include riding (1hr flat in a double bridle for Stage 4 candidates and 1hr jumping) and lunging. Dates listed below

Monday 20th June 2022 - Lungeing to include training aids. Conformation and shoeing practical (2 CPD Points for BHS APC's)

Participants must have BHS Stage 2 ride and care or equivalent. Weight limit 13 stone. £95 each full day 9.30am to 4.30pm. Skills record can be signed off if the candidate is up to the level.

Stage 3/4 Coaching Training

All training in a small group with Sandra Morrison BHSI (Lead Assessor) and will cover BHS stage 3/4 teach syllabus and will also include practical teaching. Dates listed below
